Eczema

Updated: Aug 13

Eczema poses a significant challenge, characterized by a non-contagious dry skin condition. Many individuals with eczema have a familial history of eczema or other atopic conditions like hay fever. To mitigate symptoms, it's crucial to avoid soaps as they can exacerbate dryness, itchiness, and susceptibility to allergens. Instead, when washing, bathing, or showering, using emollient soap substitutes is recommended. Bath emollients and oils can effectively hydrate the entire body.

Individuals with eczema typically have a compromised skin barrier, resulting in reduced water retention compared to normal skin. This leads to shrinkage of skin cells and the formation of gaps between them. Consequently, moisture is lost from deeper skin layers, resulting in dry skin and facilitating the penetration of potential allergens, triggering eczema symptoms.
