What is a doppler ultrasound exam of the leg.

This test uses ultrasound to look at the flow of blood in the large arteries and veins of the legs.

Doppler ultrasound examines the blood flow in the major arteries and veins in the legs with the use of ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves, that echoes off the body).  It may help diagnose venous insufficiency, occlusion go the arteries (closing), arterial blood flow abnormalities caused by narrowing or trauma to the arteries.

How the test is performed

During the exam:  - a gel which is water soluble is placed on handheld device known as a transduce.  this device will direct sound waves which are high frequency to the artery or being that is being tested.

A blood pressure cuff is put around the ankle.

How to prepare for the test: You will need to remove clothes from your legs.

How you will feel during the test: - Yo may feel slight discomfort from the pressure when the person performing the test press on the vein.

Why is the test performed: - The test is initial step to look at the veins and arteries.  This test is done to help diagnose. arteriosclerosis of the legs, venous insufficiency.  It may also used to see if the arteries are injured.

What is the meaning of normal result: - A normal result means that there is no signs of narrowing or  closures and the blood flow in the arteries is normal.

What is the meaning of abnormal result: - Abnormal results may be as a result of narrowing or widening of an artery.  Venous occlusion (closing of the vein).  Venous reflux ( blood flow in the vein going the opposite direction).

The test may also be uses to assist in the assessment of arteriosclerosis of the legs.

This procedure does not pose any risk.
